Nowadays it seems that everyone is trying to sell you something over the phone, which makes the vast majority of unwanted telemarketing calls very irritating and frustrating. If you are tired of being inundated with telemarketer phone calls, you can dramatically reduce the amount of telemarketers calling your personal phone numbers (I.E. home phone and cell phone) by registering with the National Do Not Call Registry.
Registering is free, and by registering you will limit the number of telemarketers who call you, because if a telemarketer or seller that is not permitted to contact you calls you after three months from your registration, they will be subject to a heavy fine. However, not all telemarketers must abide by these rules.
Did you know that a telemarketer whom you’ve established a business relationship with is entitled to call you up to 18 months after your last service or product purchase, payment, or delivery? Another way that you can establish a business relationship with a telemarketer is by purchasing something from one of their affiliate companies. Even though you may not have made a direct purchase from the company the telemarketer is calling from, you still established a business relationship with the other company linked to them, and therefore, have also created a business relationship with them.
Once you have established a business relationship with a company, you will remain on their calling list. Even if you are registered with the National Do Not Call Registry, you will not be removed from the calling list until the 18 months expires. Of course, this doesn’t mean you have no other alternatives if you want to stop the telemarketing calls. If you no longer wish to hear from the company, all you need to do is specifically ask them to take you off their list. If you ask the company to be removed from their telemarketer services they must comply.
It is important that you understand your rights, as well as the rights of telemarketers. Although you may find sales calls annoying, if you have established a business relationship with a company, they have every right to contact you with telemarketing calls until you request for them to stop.
